Recycling Options in Putnam County |

The Putnam County Commissioners and the Putnam County Solid Waste District administer the county's recycling program.
Why Recycle?
Every ton of glass recycled saves the equivalent of nine gallons of fuel.
One pound of newspaper can be recycled into six cereal boxes or egg cartons.
It takes 42 gallons of crude oil to make 2.5 gallons of oil. It takes one gallon of waste oil to produce the same amount.
Did You Know?
Two liter bottles are actually polyester. Sometimes when they are recycled, they are turned back into fiber and made into shirts, gloves, carpet and hats. Look for the Eco-spun label.
Newspapers can be recycled into egg cartons, pencils, and roofing insulation?
Milk jugs are made into benches and picnic tables?
Plastic bags are mixed with scrap wood to make a durable, low-maintenance plastics.

All items that are to be recycled are the same at all locations.
Items must be rinsed of food and other contaminants. Items also need to be removed from plastic bags.
Recycling Items...
Wood Fiber Stream
Cardboard: Flattened corrugated sheets and boxes, flattened chipboard (cake, cereal, cracker boxes), file folders, poster board, brown paper bags, paper egg cartons, etc. Please cut down large boxes and remove plastic windows. Pizza boxes. Please cut out oil contamination.
Glossy Paper: Material that has a glossy sheen including magazines and catalogs.
Mixed Office Paper: Office and school paper including copy, construction, envelopes, computer, tablets, phone books, junk mail, and workbooks with wire or plastic binding removed.
Newspaper: Newspaper and all associated items including advertisements and flyers. No plastic bags or rubber bands.
Books: Hardcover or paperback books placed in a paper bag for easy separation. Books are used in the free book exchange program.
The Commingled Stream
Cans: Aluminum or tin cans including empty aerosol cans. Lids of glass containers. Containers must be rinsed of food and other contaminants.
Aluminum Foil: Aluminum or foil rinsed free of food waste or contaminants.
Plastics: Numbers 1, 2, 4. (no peanuts or bulk packaging) Look for identifying number inside triangle usually located at the base of the container. Please crush containers as much as possible so that space can be used to capacity in the trailers.
Glass: Food or beverage container glass. Lids removed. No bulbs, ornamental, window, pyrex, or cookware glass.
